Unbroken Glass is a documentary about filmmaker Dinesh Sabu's journey
to understand his parents, who died 20 years ago when he was six years
old. Traveling to India, Lousiana, California, and New Mexico, Dinesh
pieces together the story of his mother's schizophrenia and how his
family dealt with it in an age and culture where mental illness was
often misunderstood, scorned and taboo.
Unbroken Glass is more than
a story about immigrants or mental illness, it is a nuanced story of
one family and their struggles.
INTERRUPT VIOLENCE, a transmedia community engagement campaign inspired by the Independent Spirit Award-winning documentary film, THE INTERRUPTERS, launches at http://www.interruptviolence.com. The campaign contains educational outreach tools aimed at reducing the corrosive persistence of violence in American cities. Using HTML5 and popcorn.js technology, it marks the cutting-edge in online community engagement around documentary. When acclaimed director Steve James and bestselling author Alex Kotlowitz set out to make the documentary, their goal was to change the conversation around violence. “We hoped THE INTERRUPTERS would play some role in communities-in-need and be part of the solution to these issues, and in over hundreds of screenings we have seen that occur,” said James. " But we were always aware of the new opportunities available for social issue media projects to integrate film with user-generated content, on platforms like the web and mobiles, and to engage audiences in a different way."
INTERRUPT VIOLENCE was developed by Kartemquin Films with The Independent Television Service (ITVS) and The Mozilla Foundation through The Living Docs Project, an innovation lab that brings together filmmakers and technology developers to create interactive cinema online using HTML5 and popcorn.js technology. The initiative also gained support from Tribeca Film Institute's New Media Fund and subsequently won an Empowerment Grant from Motorola Mobility Foundation to leverage mobile technologies.
